DGT theory test topics › Vehicle Mechanics and Maintenance
In Spain the legal minimum tyre tread depth is 1.6 mm, although the DGT advises changing tyres earlier. A car must pass its first ITV inspection at 4 years old, then every 2 years until it is 10, and every year after that.
Key rules to remember
- Tyre tread: the legal minimum is 1.6 mm. The tread wear indicator (TWI) on the side of the tyre shows when you are close to it.
- Change them earlier: for good grip in the wet, the DGT's experts recommend at least 3 mm; worn tyres increase the risk of aquaplaning.
- ITV for cars: first inspection at 4 years, every 2 years from 4 to 10 years, and every year from 10 years.
- Modifications: if you change parts that alter the details on the ITV card, the car needs a specific inspection even if it is less than 4 years old.
Exam tip: Mechanics questions are usually about safety, not engineering: ask yourself what keeps the car stable, visible and able to brake.
