DGT theory test topics › Road Safety and Behaviour
The alcohol limit in Spain is 0.25 mg/l in exhaled air (0.5 g/l in blood), and only 0.15 mg/l (0.3 g/l) for new and professional drivers. Any presence of drugs in your body is an offence, and driving above 0.60 mg/l of alcohol is a crime.
Key rules to remember
- Alcohol limits: 0.25 mg/l in exhaled air for most drivers; 0.15 mg/l for new drivers and professional drivers.
- Penalties: alcohol or drugs mean a fine of 500 to 1,000 euros and the loss of 4 to 6 points. Above 0.60 mg/l it is a crime.
- Drugs: any presence of drugs in the driver's body can be penalised.
- The only safe level is 0.0: the DGT reminds drivers that the risk of a crash increases even below the legal limit.
- Vulnerable road users: since 1 October 2026 the law defines pedestrians, cyclists, users of e-scooters and riders and passengers of motorcycles and mopeds as vulnerable road users.
Exam tip: Learn the alcohol limits in both units, mg/l in breath and g/l in blood, so that you recognise them however the question is written.
