DGT theory test topics › Driver and Vehicle Documentation
A Spanish category B licence lets you drive vehicles up to 3,500 kg with no more than 8 passengers plus the driver, and tow a trailer of up to 750 kg. New drivers start with 8 points and experienced drivers have 12. You must carry your driving licence, the vehicle registration certificate and the ITV card.
Key rules to remember
- Category B: vehicles with a maximum authorised mass of up to 3,500 kg, designed to carry no more than 8 passengers besides the driver.
- Trailers: up to 750 kg with a B licence. Heavier trailers are allowed with B if the combination does not exceed 3,500 kg; up to 4,250 kg you need the B96 authorisation, and above that the B+E licence.
- Points: drivers with more than three years of experience have 12 points; new drivers, and drivers who get their licence back after losing it, start with 8. New drivers move to 12 points after two years without losing points, and the maximum is 15.
- Documents to carry: driving licence, vehicle registration certificate (permiso de circulación) and ITV card. You do not need to carry the insurance papers. The licence and registration certificate in the miDGT app are valid in Spain.
Exam tip: Questions about weights are easier if you learn three numbers: 750 kg, 3,500 kg and 4,250 kg.
